MEDFORD, Ore. – Rogue Valley native Aaron Hutchinson shut the door and sealed the deal as the Rogues picked up an opening night victory, 10-6 against the Yuba City Bears on Tuesday night. In front of 1,500 baseball fans at Harry & David Field, the Medford Rogues used three pitchers and pieced together eight hits to get through their first game of 2017.

Central Point’s Dylan Pearce got the nod after pitching the last game of the 2016 season for the Rogues in the Great West League Championship series. Pearce went 4.1 innings scattering three hits.

Future Kansas State Wildcat, Bobby Wood picked up the win for the Rogues after throwing 1.2 innings. Hutchinson, who hadn’t pitched for over a year because of an injury, threw three innings of hitless baseball with five strikeouts picking up the save.

“That’s why we got Hutchinson, because I know he’s going to throw strikes,” said Rogues Manager Josh Hogan. “His stuff is a lot more electric than it used to be. He’s got a lot more velocity on his fastball and a lot more movement on his off-speed stuff.”

Voted ‘player of the game’, Connor Lowrie (Blackhawk JC) led the charge for the Rogues going 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Jake Hellweg (Bethune Cookman) had a remarkable diving grab in the third inning in right field. He backed up his performance in the field going 2-4, with two runs scored.

The two meet on Wednesday for a 6:35pm first pitch at Harry & David Field. Wednesday is Fire Prevention Night with a Touch A’ Truck event for kids and Smokey Bear throwing out the first pitch. Get your tickets: CLICK HERE.
