April 17, 2020 – ALVISO, CA: On Tuesday April 14, 2020 all league board members and franchises voted unanimously to cancel the 2020 season due to current federal, state (California, Nevada, Oregon) and county guidelines related to COVID-19.

With the safety and well-being of our players, coaches, families, staff members and fans being top priority, all ownership groups agreed the risk is too great to move forward with a 2020 GSCBL season.

“We met as a league on March 17 and planned on proceeding forward with the season, however as time went by and the situation worsened it changed the likeliness of that happening,” said Marc Cavigia, Co-Owner of the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League.

The league discussed different contingency plans to save the season, including the possibility of delaying the start date until the middle of June, 2020, but decided against it considering how much uncertainty the near future will hold. The league did agree that while it won’t operate together in 2020, each franchise has the opportunity to create its own schedule if they chose.

“About an hour before we met as a league on Tuesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom laid out the roadmap for recovery in the state. While doing that he discussed how mass gatherings will not be in the cards anytime soon until we get to herd immunity and have a vaccine. He mentioned that gatherings in June, July and August are unlikely and this falls right in the months of our season. Opening day was set for May 28 and the championship game was on July 26,” said Caviglia.

The league has already started planning for the 2021 season and looks forward to bringing collegiate summer baseball back to its different cities. “We miss our fans, we miss our players who call the GSCBL home for the summer. We will be back and ready in 2021,” said Caviglia.
